Technologies to be funded and why
Details of funded technologies

Open Canopy Units
Emissions have high impact on operator health. Typical construction practices of forward and reverse operations directly expose operators to equipment exhaust streams. Used for truck loading /unloading, material stock piling, back-filling trenches, compaction operations and material loading operations. Equipment will include backhoes, bulldozers, wheel loaders, rollers, small trenching equipment, etc. Technologies to be applied: DOCs, repower, equipment replacement, idle reduction strategies.

Compaction Equipment
Higher emission equipment. Generally older equipment due to its simplicity and durability. Commonly used in trench applications where exhaust is contained in the trench, compounding exposure of the operator and other workers. Technologies to be applied: primarily equipment replacement, idle reduction strategies.

Boring Equipment
Higher emission equipment. Typically older units, stationary units with operators and crew working in close proximity to unit. Technologies to be applied: DOCs, repower, equipment replacement, idle reduction strategies.

Compact Equipment
Higher emission equipment. Mostly open-canopy equipment used on tight construction sites, in densely populated areas, inside buildings or for dirt work inside new basements. Smaller engine units, which may have higher emissions per engine size, are frequently used by companies far beyond the normal life cycle of the equipment for economic reasons. Technologies to be applied: DOCs, repower, equipment replacement, idle reduction strategies.

Equipment Owner/Operator Education
Education of equipment owners, managers and operators on the technologies and benefits of diesel emission reduction, alternative fuels and reducing operator safety hazards was determined to be a necessity to reinforce and extend the impact of the engine upgrades/replacements. Education will be required for any company receiving assistance.
